The biggest sensation of the last month is the opening of Hamburger America on the SW corner of MacDougal and West Houston Streets.Eater NYcalls the burgers the “Hamburgers America deserves.” It is the creation of actor/filmmaker George Motz, who named the place after his 2004 film Hamburger America. The place is designed like an old-fashioned luncheonette — a Formica counter with yellow stools snuggling up to a flat-top griddle. The menu is relatively brief, offering familiar lunch counter items including sandwiches on white or whole wheat, grilled cheese, french fries, wedges of pie, coffee, lemonade and chocolate chip cookies. But there can be no doubt hamburgers are the center of attention. Currently, two are available — the Smash Burger and the Motz Burger. Mike Bloomberg ate there on opening day, but the prices are not Bloombergesque. A single burger is $7.25 and a double $11.50. String fries are $4.25. A beer is $6 and an egg cream (!!!) is $5.
